Earlier this year, Kanye West began weekly hosting Sunday services in the headlines. His wife, Kim Kardashian, was seen at the front line promoting the events, and several celebrities – such as Katy Perry, David Letterman and Kid Cudi – were invited. The services seem to be omnipresent in Hollywood lately.
Sunday worship, however, is different from the church in many ways – one of which is that only the invitees are admitted. Is that the case? Kim and Kanye's way of founding a new religion? The two certainly have enough followers to start one.
What kind of religion are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West?
Before we examine whether to found a new religion, it is important to understand what religion they have identified as. Both Kim and Kanye have vocalized that they are of Christian origin.
Kim's family was actually very religious when she grew up. Her sister Khloe once said, "We went to church religiously every Sunday. When we started aging, my dad did not go to church anymore, but he still read the Bible every day. On Sundays it was about bringing the church to our house. He would play gospel music – it had so much soul and he loved that.
To this day, the Kardashian-Jenners still try to keep their faith close by sharing Bible verses with their mother in a group discussion.
Kanye is also very religious. He has integrated his faith into music with songs like "Jesus Walks" and "Ultralight Beam".
The Sunday Services of Kanye West Are Not Considered a Church
Kanye's Sunday worship services contain some of the things that can be found in a regular church, such as choir and gospel music. However, Kim pointed out that this is not actually a church and the family does not consider it as such.
"It's more of a purely healing experience," she once said. "There is no prayer, there is no preaching, no word, only music and only one feeling – and it is Christian."
Kanye, who opened the Sunday worship service, refused to grow up Christianity. In recent years, however, he has become more connected to his religion and proudly spread the messages of his faith to all. "I am like a ship, and God chose me as my voice and connection," he said.
Kanye's Sunday worship services may also be a different type of worship, especially for people like his younger self who do not identify much with traditional church services.
Do Kanye West and Kim Kardashian begin a religion?
Some people have actually considered that Sunday worship, rather than being a new church, is eerily a new religion – one that reveres Kanye.
Sunday worship services use Kanye's own songs, and the gospel performances often focus on the rapper himself. People have long regarded Kanye as a selfish artist who thinks too high about himself, so the thought of trying to create a religion in which everyone honors him is not too far-fetched.
A Western source said that he only wants to help others: "Say what you want from Kanye, but he really wants to help the people who need support. He understands brokenness and the need for healing, probably more than most people. He believes in the healing powers of music, but also believes that God can intervene and heal the remoteness and the problems of the people.
Since Sunday worship services have only been available for a few months, it is still too early to say the will of Kanye's Sunday Easter service in Coachella attracted more than 50,000 visitors – he also served as a platform on which Kanye merchandise sold with profit. Only time will tell what further steps Kanye and Kim will take with their Sunday services.
