The first trailer for the new Mulan movie is here. It's the latest live-action Disney adaptation of a classic animated cartoon, featuring Liu Yifei as the Chinese teenager disguised as a man to fight invaders in the Imperial Army. You can see it above.
The trailer is visually stunning, suggesting that Mulan, unlike the latest Disney live-action films such as Dumbo and Aladdin, will pursue a slightly different approach than the original. It is not a direct adaptation of the 1998 animated film and also influences the original poem "The Ballad of Mulan" from the 6th century. The trailer begins with quiet domestic scenes of Mulan and her family before delivering spectacular-looking martial arts action, while Mulan takes her place to fight in the Emperor's army.
Mulan's cast includes some well-known Asian stars such as Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Gong Li. The film is made by New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro, who previously ran the keeper's wife. Caro explained earlier that this version of Mulan will not include any songs ̵
The next live action Disney adaptation is the Lion King, which will be released later this month. It's being staged by Jon Favreau, who previously ran The Jungle Book's latest hit remake – watch the latest Lion King trailer. Other Disney remakes in the works are Cruella, The Little Mermaid and Pinnochio.
