Diversification of Energy Sources is Key to Reducing Carbon Emissions

The long-term shift towards the use of natural gas is one of the reasons why energy production in the US from renewables exceeded coal output. Natural gas is not only cheaper, but also a cleaner source of electricity. There are upward tendencies to build wind and solar farms which are inexpensive to set up and maintain. As energy companies diversify sources of energy, carbon footprint is reduced that is vital not only for the environment and job creation, but also for sustaining energy companies.

Natural Gas 

According to the US Energy Information Administration, there were an estimated 2,462 trillion cubic feet of dry natural gas which can supply the country for about 90 years. Natural gas accounts for 31.8% of the nation’s primary energy production. In Ohio alone, the highest energy consumption is from natural gas, followed by coal, and other renewables. Ohio’s natural gas production is rapidly rising with Utica Shale’s output 28 times higher in 2018 than in 2012. Wind Turbines 

Wind power output has more than tripled in the past decade and there are now more than 56,600 wind turbines in the country with an operating capacity 97,223MW according to the American Wind Energy Association. It also supported 114,000 jobs across 50 US states including Puerto Rico. Wind energy generated 6.5% of the nation’s electricity needs powering around 650 million homes. But, the main take is that wind energy use avoided CO2 emissions of up to 201 million metric tons.

Solar Energy

Solar is quickly growing as well and there are 64.2 GW of installed solar systems that can support 12.3 million US homes. Solar energy comprises 1.6% of the total electricity generation in America. It also creates jobs with ‘photovoltaic installer’, the fastest-growing job in the US. More importantly, solar power makes up over 70 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year equivalent to planting nearly 1.2 billion trees. Barriers to entry for new investors are lower because the price of solar has been reduced to over 70% since 2010. But, on the other hand, the efficiency of solar panel has increased from 6% in 1954 to over 40% using modern and high-efficiency panels according to Solstice.

Renewables, if given the right support at the legislative level and aggressive investments, will flourish and produce power that will turn every state into a net exporter of energy. Branching out to different sources of clean energy will not only lower carbon emissions, but also sustain the operations of energy companies.
