What is the verdict?
The 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody is both too much car for my driving skills and exactly the big V8 two-door that I could choose for its restrained driving due to its pleasant exhaust noise and extremely comfortable seats.
A paradox, don’t you think? But if you think about it a bit more, it’s a super-American version of a performance machine: fallback styling, couch potato comfort, tremendous performance, a set of rear wheels that don’t want to get stuck on the sidewalk, and advanced technology scads that keeps everything in check.
Turning a Hellcat into an SRT Redeye Widebody Hellcat raises the sticker price by $ 17,600 and brings everything from an engine cooler to a special speedometer that is registered for 220 miles per hour to the party. The car is aimed at dedicated PS fans who probably drive this vacuum cleaner straight ahead from time to time, but also want to drive around curves.
In this regard, this challenger is … a challenge. In track mode you have to activate the start control, otherwise you will lose the back end immediately. As with the Corvette ZR1 with 755 hp, you instinctively choose your ambitions back, which ultimately limits a large part of the performance. Which is fine, because you can have a lot of fun swinging the tachometer and keep hearing how the charger winds up. The sweet symphony of a great Hemi remains something special in the automotive world.
I drove the muscular Mustangs and Camaros, which are the natural rivals of the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye widebody, and like other Dodges, I found the Challenger to be a very special animal. It’s obviously the most disgusting of the group, but it also does a good job of housing its technology without undermining its stinking premise.
In other words, it makes no compromises in the life of the 21st century. Aside from transforming these compromises into something innovative: mostly controlled anger.
This is quite unique and an obvious selling point. So if you’re looking for a more advanced dinosaur on the market, the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody could be your beast.
