Over the past decade, electric vehicles have turned from a bad joke to the most powerful production cars that money can buy. But the old guard will not go out without a bang, or in the case of Fiat Chrysler's latest vehicle, a huge gas bill.
The company unveiled a new special edition of the Classic Dodge Challenger this week, and it's the most American of the American muscle cars. The 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye comes with a turbocharged Hemi Demon 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 797 hp, 707 lb-ft of torque and a sound that sounds eerily like a Bruce Springsteen guitar solo.
"I like to say it's a Hellcat owned by a demon," said Steve Beahm, head of US passenger car brands for Fiat Chrysler. The design was heavily inspired by the Demon, a heavily limited edition Challenger 201
The most frightening statistic about the car could only be fuel consumption. At maximum speed, the Hellcat Redeye consumes 1.4 gallons of gas – just over $ 3 at current average prices – and will empty the fuel tank in just 11 minutes. At normal highway speeds, however, Fiat Chrysler claims a much more reasonable 22mg.
The car will be available for around $ 70,000 in the fourth quarter of 2018, and unlike last year's Demon, Beahm promises that it will become much more widely available. "We will make them accessible to all and not a few," said Beahm.
