When we think of the Princess of Wales, most people think of the image of the late Princess Diana. In the course of British history, however, there were many princesses of Wales, since the title has been handed down since the 14th century. Prince Charles is the current Prince of Wales. Does that make his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, the true princess of Wales? It turns out that it's not that easy.
The public loved Diana as Princess of Wales
When Diana Spencer married Prince Charles in 1981, she became Princess of Wales and remained under that title until her death in 1997. That's why Princess Diana was often referred to as the "People's Princess." She had tremendous public support. Her kindness and generosity made her the most popular member of the royal family in public.
Even after her divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana retained the title Princess of Wales. She lost the style of Her Royal Highness, but was allowed to become known as Diana, Princess of Wales. The queen wanted to allow Princess Diana to retain her royal highness, but Prince Charles fought to be removed. This should have hurt Princess Diana profoundly as it separated her from the rest of the royal family, causing her to bow to those who had the honor.
In a sweet gesture, Prince William, then 14 years old, tried to console his mother by saying, "Do not worry, Mom, I'll give it back to you someday when I'm king.
Unfortunately, this would never happen because Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car accident. When she died, Britain and the whole world mourned her. Since she was known as the Princess of Wales at the time of her death, the public of that generation will probably always remember her like that.
The public was annoyed with Camilla Parker Bowles
Unlike Princess Diana, Parker Bowles did not enjoy public support most of her life. The public generally sees her as the woman responsible for Princess Diana's misfortune because she was with Prince Charles for a long time.
During his marriage to Princess Diana, the press, the public and Diana became aware that Prince Charles was continuing with Parker Bowles. For that reason, the public will probably always be annoyed with them. Parker Bowles had to fight incredibly hard to marry Princess Charles. It took many years for the public to forgive, and many still do not.
Is Camilla Parker Bowles the Princess of Wales?
When Parker Bowles married Prince Charles, she was technically the Princess of Wales, but she never used the title. Instead, she referred to herself as Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall.
The most likely reason why Parker Bowles does not use the title of Princess of Wales is that he would upset fans of the late Princess Diana. During her lifetime, the public became accustomed to Diana as Princess of Wales, and to avoid hurt feelings and confusion, Prince and Parker Bowles decided to use the Duchess of Cornwall as their title.
In a way, it shows Princess Diana a certain amount of respect so that she can continue to be the only Princess of Wales in this generation. For Parker Bowles, however, it could just be a self-preservation. With people loving Princess Diana, Parker Bowles knows it's important to honor her. Parker Bowles has worked hard to gain the trust of the public, and this becomes even more important when Prince Charles ever becomes king.
