Dog food recalled due to potentially harmful levels of vitamin D.

First of all, it must be clear: every dog is the best dog, especially yours. But unfortunately it looks like your drooling, howling, underwear-sniffing, sock-eating angel of perfection is not very smart.

(CNN) – Sunshine Mills, the manufacturer of several animal feed brands, points to three of its puppy and dog food products and points to potentially high levels of vitamin D, which could lead to "serious health problems" including kidney failure.

The affected brands are Evolve, Sportsman's Pride and Triumph statement, which is also published on the website of the US Food and Drug Administration.

"Vitamin D can cause serious health problems in dogs at very high levels, including kidney dysfunction," the company said. Symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urgency, excessive drinking and weight loss.

Develop Dried Food for Chicken and Rice Puppies, Athlete Pride "Best Buy Date Code from November 1, 2018 to November 8, 2019" are affected and should not be fed to pets. Dogs that have eaten and have any of the symptoms should be seen by a veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products can return them to the seller for a refund.

No other Evolve of Sportsman Pride or Triumph products are affected, the company said.

Several other manufacturers have recently issued dog food recalls for potentially high levels of vitamin D, including Elm Pet Foods, which uses Sunshine Mills facilities, according to the company's website.

Similar recalls have been issued by ANF Inc., Nutrisca, Natural Life, and the Lidl grocery chain (for Orlando Food Dog Food).
