Doom Eternal joins this year's Game Delay Club and launches in March 2020

Doom Eternal – the highly anticipated sequel to the reboot of the Hell Shooter series of 2016 – has left our list of highly anticipated 2019 games. On Tuesday morning, game publisher Bethesda announced that Doom Eternal needs another four months in the oven . This means it will launch on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on March 20, 2020.

This list of supported platforms lacks a great name: Nintendo Switch. The Tuesday's delay includes an additional, indefinite delay in the successor's follow-up to Nintendo's weaker console, breaking the developer's original promise that Switch buyers could rip the same day as anyone else in Doom Eternal . "We will announce the [the Switch port̵

7;s] date in the future," the company statement vaguely states.

Bethesda seized the opportunity to postpone another similar game from November 2019: Doom 64 . According to Bethesda, this first port of the 1997 shooter will still be available on PCs and modern consoles on non-N64 platforms, but it will also be released on March 20, 2020. Order Bonus for Buyers of Doom Eternal . However, we are not sure why Bethesda and id Software could not finish Doom 64 this Christmas season to surprise the fans of the series during the delay of the bigger game. (In the meantime, if you have a legitimate copy of the N64 original, we recommend ripping the files and launching the incredible Doom 64 EX-Mod.] On the PC.)

The amount of delay seems to be considerable, as the game is not even finished by March 2020, according to today's statement. The "invasion mode" of the new game, with which online players become the bad guys in the single-player campaigns of other real players, is delayed as a "free update shortly after launch". id Software does not say exactly how "short" that will be.

This delay is a particular disappointment, considering how sophisticated Doom Eternal felt as a world premiere this summer at a pre-E3 event. As I wrote:

I'm not as excited about a video game under development as Doom Eternal . After playing the 20-minute E3 demo for the first time, I screamed, "AGAIN, AGAIN!" like a kid who did not want to get off a rollercoaster (thankfully, once again, had fun). When I got home and prepared this article before Bethesda's E3 press conference, I combed a full footage video provided by the developers, like a sad ex who leafed through a photo album. I had to look again. I wanted to remember.

I guess I have to watch those old video clips for a few more months to wait for this game to return. We hope that the delay will help id Software keep the promise of the demo: more of the same action, only with more open skies, less claustrophobic corridors, and a perfect combination of new monsters and new weapons alike.

If you want to score, Doom Eternal joins a high-profile list of games originally announced for 2019. These include Animal Crossing: New Horizons Wasteland 3 and Psychonauts 2 . (We're still wondering if Valve will be on that list with his repeatedly promised "VR Game," which is currently scheduled for launch in "2019.")

Even if it's not a game, you can put the upcoming movie Sonic the Hedgehog on this list. The year 2020 was also revived by an outcry over his first live-action trailer this year.
