A well known brazilian plastic surgeon named dr. Bumbum was arrested after four days in the run-up to the death of one of his patients
Denis Furtado was imprisoned in Rio de Janeiro thanks to an anonymous tip.
His patient Lilian Calixto died following injections he gave her to enlarge her buttocks.
Dr. Furtado is confronted with murder charges. His mother was also arrested and charged with being an accomplice.
Investigators say Dr. Furtado had carried out the case against Ms. Calixto, a 46-year-old mother of two, at his home in Rio de Janeiro, but she fell ill during the procedure.
Dr. Furtado took her to a hospital where her condition worsened and she died a few hours later, police said. Local media reported that she had an unusually fast heart rate in the hospital.
Dr. Furtado disappeared. On Wednesday, his lawyer said he was innocent and did not turn to the police for panicking.
In a video released Thursday after being arrested on social media, Dr. Furtado that Calixto's death was a "fatal accident". and said that he had carried out 9,000 such procedures and that they were legal in Brazil.
The 45-year-old has appeared on Brazilian television and has nearly 650,000 followers on his Instagram account.
Ms. Calixto had arrived from her home in Cuiabá, Central Brazil, on Saturday night to seek her first appointment. Furtado undergo a buttock augmentation, it said.
The procedure, which was presumably the injection of acrylic filler, took place in his place in the upscale neighborhood of Barra de Tijuca.
Police said that Dr. Furtado's girlfriend was arrested on suspicion of participating in the trial.
The Regional Medical Council of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) claimed to have initiated an investigation into the death of Ms. Calixto.
Niveo Steffen, president of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, said there was a "growing invasion of non-specialists" in the industry.
"You can not perform plastic surgery in an apartment," he told AFP News Agency.
"Many people sell a dream, a fantasy of patients in an unethical way and people, weakened, are often attracted to low prices without thinking about whether the conditions are appropriate or not."
Dr. Furtado has a great online tracking through various social media accounts.
Aside from his popular Instagram page, he's also very active on Facebook – filling his page with before-and-after recordings of buttock treatments – and on YouTube, where he gives advice on everything from endometriosis to low-carbohydrate diets.
In a social media post, he said that he has named his clients the name Dr. Bumbum received and accepted it as a term of affection.
