When it comes to legendary JPRGs in the West, you can easily rattle the usual suspects. Final Fantasy VII Persona 4 Chrono Trigger … You get the picture. Dragon Quest III however, is under criminal control. With the recent reissue of the Erdrick Trilogy on Switch, players have the opportunity to test one of the best releases in the entire series. While Dragon Quest enjoys a modest reputation in the West today, Dragon Quest III is a significant advance over its predecessors and one of the best JRPGs you can buy today on Switch. However, it comes with some notable reservations.

Dragon Quest III is a forerunner of the original Dragon Quest and tells the story of Ortega, charged with defeating Baramos the fiend. While in Dragon Quest II we saw some flourishes of a story, it is this amazing third entry that allows the franchisee to truly complete its steps. The curvy plot will keep you on your toes and the wide world will allow you to discover new corners and nooks to explore. The world of Dragon Quest III is a real pleasure and will surprise you on your way again and again. NPC interactions are one of the biggest highlights in the game, and the way they're written makes romping through a carefree fantasy world an incredibly fun experience] Equipped with one of the strongest soundtracks a Dragon Quest title can have , the newly arranged MIDI tracks by Koichi Sugiyama shine, and let Dragon Quest III's carefree imagination really bring out her personality. It is a pleasure to go through the game and enjoy the music in new areas again and again.

Some improvements have been made in Dragon Quest III, especially a complete cure option that will help you quickly maintain your music. The health of the entire group is restored with a single touch (assuming you have the necessary elements). In addition, you have an additional group member and can put together your group at will. Further pushing out of the boat is the addition of a day / night cycle in which you can face up to various bad guys if you hang around in the evenings.

The combat system has been slightly redesigned to take into account more immersive gameplay with more abilities adding a new dimension to the proven strategy of "Swatting the Sword and perhaps casting a spell" that was used in the previous two games of the series. As always, the random struggles in this release persist and can still be frustrating. Without the extra turbo button, things can get frustrating as you wait for enemies to slowly attack your party.

Compared to Dragon Quest I and II on Switch, III does not seem to suffer from the same problem that the character art does not match the backgrounds, and it does manages to fit in pretty seamlessly. So you can really see the Akira Toriyama-Sprite-Work-shine. Unfortunately, there is still a small problem with exploring maps, but it is not enough to distract you completely from the game.

Conclusion

Dragon Quest III may be slightly more expensive than its two younger brothers in the Switch eShop. But it's great to explore the world of Dragon Quest for the first time. Even compared to modern JRPGs Dragon Quest III is considered one of the best in the genre. If you just had to choose one of the three newly released Dragon Quest games, choose Dragon Quest III – we can promise you will not be disappointed.
