Duckworth appears as a contender for Biden’s running companions

Former Senate majority leader Harry M. Reid, who was in direct contact with the Biden campaign because of his search, said in an interview recently that Duckworth, whom he described as a “highly decorated woman,” received “a lot of attention.”

Reid suggested that Duckworth’s qualifications be given more attention. “They all had other names there, and it was as if they didn’t exist,” said Reid (D-Nev.). “And suddenly people started looking at her ̵

1; this highly decorated woman, member of Congress, Senator.”

Two others with knowledge of the search said Duckworth had sparked great interest in the campaign, including one who said Duckworth had made a strong impression on at least part of the Biden team. They spoke about private advice on the condition of anonymity.

The Biden campaign declined to comment. A Duckworth spokesman also declined to comment.

Duckworth shows up when some allies from Biden say that former senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), A close friend of Biden, plays an important role in the search process. It also unfolds as the Republicans prepare to launch violent attacks on anyone selected as a running companion, believing that that person could be an easier target than Biden himself.

As the review continues, people with knowledge of the search say that it remains fluid and that it is not clear who Biden will choose, with Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) Of many allies in Biden still is considered a favorite and other perspectives very much in the mix. Some allies from Biden privately said that Duckworth is an appealing candidate, but they don’t think she will be selected in the end.

Aside from Duckworth’s relative inexperience at the national level, her selection would frustrate those who urge Biden to choose an African American. The questions raised by demonstrators in recent weeks underscore the need for someone who understands the black experience in America.

In a Sunday interview about CNN’s State of the Union, Duckworth said that black voters are “a key to Democratic victory.”

But she added that the Biden campaign has a “process of its own that they are going through, and I am sure that Vice President Biden will choose the right person to be next to him when he gets this country out of the mess that.” Donald Trump has put us in. “

Duckworth recently blocked the transport of 1,123 senior military personnel to elicit Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper’s assurance that he would not retaliate against an army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, for his role in impeaching President Trump.

Biden, who said his running companion would be a woman, is considering a diverse list of candidates. Reviewers included Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Former United Nations Ambassador Susan E. Rice, and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) to persons with knowledge of the situation who spoke about private conversations on condition of anonymity. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) Was also reviewed by the campaign.

While some of the candidates took the traditional stance of not publicly applying for the job, others, like Rice, were more open to promoting their references. With Biden’s commitment to choosing a woman and the public debate over whether to become an African American, this was an unusually open search process.

“Joe Biden will have to decide who he thinks will be his best running companion, and I will do my best by drawing on my years of experience in government and years of bureaucracy,” said Rice am Sunday at NBC. Meet the press.

She added: “I have worked on several campaigns and presidential campaigns. I was on the campaign as a replacement and will do everything I can to get Joe Biden to vote and help him succeed as President, whether I am his walking mate or a door knocker. ”

Biden initially said he planned to name his running companion by August 1, but recently suggested that the deadline might pass. When the prospects were examined, Dodd consolidated his position as a central figure in the process, according to people who are informed of the situation.

Dodd, 76, is one of four co-chairs of the selection committee, but “it is obvious that Dodd is the group chairman,” said Reid, who spoke directly to Dodd.

Some groups have expressed concerns about Biden’s decision to include Dodd on the selection committee. In the 1980s, Dodd is said to have behaved inappropriately towards a waitress at La Brasserie in Washington. This emerges from a GQ article describing an alleged encounter with the late Senator Edward Kennedy, who physically forced himself on a waitress.

Dodd did not respond to a request for comment on Sunday.

The Republicans are closely monitoring the actions of the Biden team. Trump allies are preparing to trigger a barrage of attacks on anyone who emerges as a running mate, the people familiar with the plans said.

Biden herself has proven largely impenetrable to Trump’s attacks, and Trump’s helpers hope that the vice-presidential candidate – a woman who could be more liberal and less familiar than Biden – will prove more prone to criticism.

The attacks could be aggravated by Biden’s age, 77and the possibility that he would serve only one term, making his running mate a waiting president.

“Republicans are more likely than ever to beat the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate,” said Dan Eberhart, an oil industry manager and Trump donor. “Biden is penned up by the progressives in the party – he has to choose a woman and someone who is relatively far to the left of himself. This will offer natural opportunities for the campaign to draw contrasts. “

According to a person familiar with the group’s activities, America Rising, a conservative organization, has submitted applications under the Freedom of Information Act to provide background information on potential customers.

Those close to Biden’s process say that his campaign anticipates and involves the GOP attacks, and they argue that Republican attacks could backfire.

A person with system skills recently said that more in-depth interviews are likely to be arranged and conducted by Biden and his team at some point.

Some Democrats don’t expect Biden to announce his election shortly before the Democratic National Convention, which is scheduled to start on August 17. This would be a more traditional time to name a selection, and it would avoid giving Trump a goal in the EU in between weeks.

“My only admonition is: don’t rush in,” said Reid. “Because things are changing significantly.”
