Honda makes another run in the dunking of the Toyota Prius primate among hybrid compact sedans with a stylish new 2019 look that rates it rated at 55 mpg in the city , That should be right on the Prius, EPA rated at 54 mpg in the city for most versions, competing for buyers who want to have a dedicated hybrid sedan.

This is Honda's third ever appearance The automaker was a gas-electric hybrid pioneer in 1999 with the charming-weird little two-seated Insight, but Toyota later came with the Prius sedan and the Re st is history. Neither a previous Insight reboot nor a not so charming wedge-shaped sedan nor a lukewarm Civic hybrid could run with the big dog.
Will the attraction be the third time for the Insight? The 2019 model shows that Honda is back on track with renewed energy, and the Insight will be built alongside Civics in Ohio – which should ensure that they can sell as many as they can sell. The Insight is part of the Just-in-Sale Accord Hybrids 2018 and the Clarity models (Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and Fuel Cell) among the new electrified vehicle options in the Honda model range.
With estimates of mileage ratings competitive, this will be a good test if the core hybrid buyer wants a car that's a bit weird to advertise their green cred. The Insight 2019 is anything but strange – on the contrary. In a veiled thrust on the Prius, Honda calls it "universally responsive styling". And the Insight trades the abundance of the Civic for less sharp elbows and more upscale trim while maintaining its overall low and wide look.
The front end is less aggressive and upright, with a bold Honda "flying wing" chrome extending over and into the standard LED headlamp housing. The Insight also gets its own weight-saving aluminum hood. LED daytime running lights and taillights are standard. A coupelike roofline extends into the trunk; Aerodynamic alloy wheels are 16 or 17 incher.
Interior and Tech
Although Honda shares the civic bones, Honda says the Insight has received ride quality and interior noise enhancements, including more sound insulation, to match its premium sedan aspirations, as well as some nicer materials and trim. The hybrid battery pack is positioned under the rear seat, allowing a relatively generous trunk of 15.1 cubic feet and a folding rear seatback (60/40 pitch for the two upper trim levels).
A 7-inch Digital The instrument display is standard on all models, as well as the push-button start. EX features include an enhanced multimedia system with an 8-inch touch screen, Apple Carplay and Android auto-smartphone integration, enhanced audio features, satellite and keyless entry. The interior of the Touring is equipped with everything: perforated leather, a power sunroof, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone air conditioning, navigation system, 4G connection with Wi-Fi hotspot and premium 10-speaker audio. The Insight shares with the company's other new electrified models a version of the company's third two-engine hybrid system. For the Insight, it includes a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine, two electric motors and no conventional gearbox. The combined power of the system is 151 hp and 197 lb-ft of torque. Honda expects an EPA city rating for the Insight of 55 mpg (for comparison, the larger and heavier 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid with a 2.0-liter gas engine and 212 net horsepower is EPA-rated at 47 mpg city, highway and combined)
The system works most of the time as a full-series hybrid, says Honda, with the gas engine generating electricity for the electric drive motor and charging the battery; On the highway, a clutch locks the gas engine to the drive axles. Honda has not specified the battery, but says the Insight should be able to do "about a mile" with battery power alone. Paddles on the steering wheel allow the driver to switch between three levels of regenerative braking. Three selectable driving programs for performance and efficiency are Normal, Econ and Sport.
Safety and Driver Assistance
All trim levels include the Honda Sensing safety and driver assistance technology, which includes a front collision system with automatic emergency brakes, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and road and lane departure warnings. All Insights also have a multi-angle rear view camera, and the EX and Touring models will also feature the Honda's LaneWatch camera system, which displays a picture of the blind spot on the passenger side of the dashboard screen.
