Ebola outbreak spreads to the new city in conflict-filled Congo News | DW

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ministry of Health confirmed Wednesday a case of the deadly Ebola virus in Bunia, the second-largest city in the east of the country with nearly one million inhabitants.

The patient is a six month old baby. The Ministry of Health said parents "seem to be in good health". The ministry has launched an investigation to find out how the baby got infected.

Public health authorities have registered very few cases of infected babies. In view of the fact that Ebola is often transmitted by infected blood or body fluids, health experts generally believe that babies, infants and children contract the virus through breast milk or close contact with infected parents.

] The Democratic Republic of the Congo was hit by the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak. More than 600 people have been killed by the virus since August last year.

The worst outbreak was the 2013-16 epidemic in West Africa, which was believed to kill more than 11,000 people.

Emergency teams have had a difficult time, partly because of poor security in the region and popular resistance to their work. Several Ebola treatment centers were attacked by armed men, causing MSF to cease their activities.

Ebola is a rare and highly infectious virus with a mortality rate of up to 90 percent, according to the WHO. Symptoms include fever, severe weakness and vomiting. The incubation period is between two and 21 days.
