On Monday, Elton John complained on Instagram about "distorted and malicious" media coverage of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.
As the BBC notes, Elton John is annoyed at British press reports that the Royals have "made four private jet trips in eleven days, including Sir Elton's house in Nice." Elton John is upset that the press has pointed out that this gas-guzzling, carbon-rich travel does not meet Harry and Markle's demands for global carbon emissions reductions. The BBC also notes that the British royal family has increased CO2 emissions by 98% over the previous year.
Do not get me wrong. For the much needed reasons to expand the genetic pool of the royal family, I am a fan of Meghan Markle. But Harry, once a cool guy, seems to be embracing boring liberal fundamentalism. He says, for example, that he will only have two children. This, Harry hopes, will offset the enormous growth of the world's population and China's incessant burping of new carbon into the atmosphere.
Good luck with that.
But let's get back to Elton John. Because in his defense of the royal couple Elton John also claimed that the use of private jets by the royals was necessary to "maintain a high level of much needed protection …".
Not true, Rocketman.
Queen Elizabeth II travels regularly on public trains, and former Prime Minister David Cameron occasionally travels on commercial flights (sometimes in economic terms). The protection of the royal family is exercised by the royal and specialized security command of the city police. I am sure that Harry and Markle's protective detail prefer to travel by private jet, but it is highly unlikely that they have requested the use of Elton John's Jet for security purposes. I say, ignore him.
