WILMINGTON Del. (WBOC / AP) – In Delaware, an insect has been officially discovered that can pass a deadly disease and is named for biting people around the mouth.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed last week the arrival of Triatoma sanguisuga, also known as the Kissing Bug.
The CDC says the mistake found its way north of South and Central America. It has already been spotted in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
The bite of the bloodsucking beetles is often painless, but can spread chagas when the infected feces flow through the open wound. Chagas disease can cause severe cardiac and gastrointestinal complications. The CDC estimates that around 300,000 people in the US live with Chagas disease.
