Flip Phones are back, baby.
Motorola revives its most famous mobile, the Razr, as a foldable smartphone with a flexible display. Not only is it surprisingly similar to the original, it could also be the first foldable phone that is more than just a gimmick.
Take notes, Samsung?
The Razr will not be available until the beginning of next year. We already know the following.
It's Not Cheap
Although not as bad as the Samsung Galaxy Fold worth $ 2,000, the new Razr has a hefty price tag. At $ 1,499, it may be a bit easier to endure than its foldable rival, but not much. And when something happens to your new smart Razr, such as a crack in its foldable display, there are additional costs for cutting out the purse to replace it. But we'll come to that later.
It is not available from any mobile service provider.
In a move that will surely disappoint many budding fans, Motorola has decided to make the Razr an exclusive Verizon in the US. Unfortunately, non-Verizon customers will be unlucky. If you are a member of the Big Red network, pre-orders will begin on December 26th. On January 9, the Razr shelves will be opened.
It's not about the technical data
As cool as the new As it stands, Motorola had to make some compromises to meet the clamshell design. So if you expect a full featured phone modeled on other flagships, the Razr is probably not for you. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 71
Motorola executives strongly believed that users would not compromise on performance. But the 710 is a less powerful chip. The average user will probably not notice this, but if you frequently run many processor-intensive applications, you should think about it before you buy.

We do not know yet how the battery life will be. Motorola has promised that the Razr will run "all day", but has stopped providing an actual estimate of the time between charges, which is … worrying. This is probably because the Razr's 2,510 mAh battery is significantly smaller than other flagships. (By comparison, the Pixel 4 has a 2,800 mAh battery and we've found it to be mediocre at best.)
However, the Razr does support the fast "TurboPower" store of Motorola a little less painfully, even if you to do it more often.
It will not be available in pink.
I know, I know. As iconic as the original Razr was, the pink variations widely promoted by Paris Hilton had their own elite status. (Personally, I was a big fan of the lighter rose gold before it was called rose gold Pink . )
This time, however, Motorola plans no more colors than the already familiar combination of boring black, stainless steel and glass. We tried to ask Paris Hilton how she found that, but unfortunately she was not available for comment. This is not hot .
There is no crease but a gap
Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, there is no crease in the middle of the display where it folds. There is, however, a small gap between the display and the hinge where it folds. The screen does not curl when you slide your finger over it, but you feel there is more room there.
This also means that you can physically lift the display and separate it from the hinge if you put your nail in that gap. We know we tried, much to the horror of nearby Motorola executives.
While this may pose some potential issues, one of the first reasons for the failure of the Galaxy Fold was that debris got stuck under its display – Motorola executives, however, seem pretty confident that this will not be a problem. there is no gap when the phone is closed.
We do not know how durable this hinge system is …
Motorola was a little awkward on how durable the collapsible display is. While Samsung considered its (admittedly flawed) Galaxy Fold display to be 200,000 times more resilient, a Motorola manager declined to say how many times the Razr could be folded and said the company considered it "proprietary information." Nevertheless, representatives of Motorola repeatedly said that the Razr can withstand two years without problems.
… and repairs are expensive.
Should your new foldable screen break, the repair could be costly. The Razr comes with a one-year standard warranty during which the company will undertake the necessary repairs. But if you damage your screen afterwards, a replacement costs $ 299.
You can only use certain apps with the smaller front display.
One of the key reasons for Motorola's decision to revive the clamshell design is that it recreates the smaller front display that you get with traditional flip phones. Unlike previous mobile phones, however, the new Razr's "Quick View" display can show more than just who is calling.
You can use the display to view your notifications and discard unwanted notifications. If you want to reply to an e-mail or a text message, you can send a suggested quick response or dictate an answer with your voice. You can also control media playback (similar to a typical lock screen), make mobile payments with Android Pay, and interact with Google Assistant.
The front-facing screen also uses the main features of the phone's 16-megapixel camera. You can take a selfie while the phone is folded or make video calls. If you start a call while your phone is folded up, you can close it and switch the call to the smaller front display while the video connection to the main camera is in progress.
