Family of baseball pitcher of Minor League killed in triple murder



Matthew Thomas Bernard, 18, was arrested on three charges of first-degree murder, a spokesman for Pittsylvania County, Virginia said in a statement to CNN.

An emergency call on Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock in the morning reported that a person had been shot, the spokesman said. The deputies went to the place where they found a deceased woman in the driveway and the bodies of another woman and a child in the house.

Bernard was arrested when he ran out of wooded area around 12:15 am, the spokesman said. A first court appearance is not planned.

CNN has attempted to reach the suspect's surviving family without comment.

The Tampa Bay Ray's Organization released a statement on behalf of Blake Bivens on Tuesday night.

"Today we learned that Blake Bivens, a pitcher with our Double-A affiliate Montgomery Biscuits, has suffered a horrific family tragedy, Southern Virginia," said the Rays on Twitter. "Our hearts are broken for Blake, we grieve with him and will support him in every possible way and we all ask to respect the privacy of the Bivens family and the Biscuits family in this very difficult time."
