The FBI has arrested a man from New Mexico who allegedly detained illegal immigrants crossing the border under the guise of working for the US Border Guard.
Larry Mitchell Hopkins leads the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), an armed border militia group that spreads right-wing extremist conspiracies and collects asylum seekers at the border.
The FBI arrested Hopkins on Saturday on charges of possessing firearms and ammunition as convicted offenders. The latest video released by UCP shows two members who seem to hold semi-automatic rifles near immigrants, many of them children.
The group also promotes conspiracy theories and produces a radio show in which members spread information about QAnon and accuse migrants of contacting ISIS.
Hopkins also claims to collaborate with Border Patrol, and President Trump personally asked him "Muslim Immigration."
The UCP is just one of several groups of vigilantes patrolling with cannons on the southern border.
New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas issued a statement on Saturday praising the FBI for the capture of Hopkins.
"This is a dangerous offender who should not have weapons near children and families," Balderas wrote in a statement. "Today's arrest by the FBI clearly shows that the rule of law should be in the hands of trained law enforcement officials, not armed vigilantes."
Hopkins is expected to make a first appearance at the US District Court in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Monday.
