Final score Texans vs. Saints: Drew Brees shows he's still successful in the comeback win over Houston

What a game. The first Monday night football matchup of the 2019 season was an absolute dandy.

Two of the NFL's best quarterbacks and two of the NFL's best wide receivers gave us a shootout that lasted until the final game: a 58-yard field-goal victory at the foot of Saints kicker Wil Lutz.

Yes, I have named Deshaun Watson as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL because he proved that on Monday night. He completed 20 of 30 passes for 268 yards, three touchdowns and an interception – eight of these deals, 111 of those yards and two of those scores went to Superstar Wideout DeAndre Hopkins. The former Clemson quarterback is facing a big year.

The Texans had a 1

4: 3 lead at halftime, and while the Saints fiercely fought back, Houston refused to leave quietly.

Let's take a look at some food stalls from perhaps the best game of the opening week of the 2019 NFL season.

Why the Saints won

Simply put, the saints won because of quarterback Drew Brees. At 40, he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and always has ice in his veins. He completed 32 of 43 passes for 370 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in that.

Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara were expected to be large parts of this offensive attack, the former capturing 10 passes for 123 yards and the latter 169 yards total offense.

Although Brees had only 37 seconds left and went one point lower, he orchestrated a 35 meter six-game drive that saw the Saints in Field Goal Range score the winner of the game. It was a big task in an emotional back-and-forth game, but Brees came through again.

Why the Texans Lost

The Saints have won this game more than the Texans. Despite the two-digit lead, the Texans refused to resign and were there until the last game. There were a few things they could have done better to win.

While the Texans recently acquired Laremy Tunsil, the line of attack was still shaky. Watson was fired six times and put under pressure almost every time he fell behind. However, just like in 2018, he fought over adversity and nearly gave Houston a win in Week One.

The defense could have helped a little bit more as well. Houston put in more yards of total insult in the first half, but after the last two quarters, the Saints had 510 yards of total insult compared to the Texans 414.

Also, the triple NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt could not register a single duel on Monday evening. Both defense mechanisms were mixed in this game, and much of it can be attributed to the game of the two quarterbacks.

Turning Point

There were several games in this play that could be considered as turning points. There were times when the Texans looked as if they were ready to run away with the game, and there were times late in the second half when the saints looked as if they had captured the victory. Both teams refused to lie down.

The one piece in which people saw the end came on the penultimate play of the game . It was second down and the saints were on the Texans' 49 yard line. For some reason, the Texans decided to topple only two players and bring the other nine into cover. The runners-up played the ball as if Brees were throwing a Hail Mary instead of getting close enough for a field goal attempt.

Ted Ginn Jr. hit a 9-yard pass to reach the 40-yard line, and Lutz sealed the deal with his kick.

This call for defensive play will come up in the press conference after the game, and I hope head coach Bill O'Brien is willing to explain his reasoning.

Gameplay

It is impossible to determine a game history for this matchup. There were so many moments that made this an incredible game, but this is forgotten because of the result.

Six points under a minute to go, Watson needed only two more games to regain the lead – a Hopkins 38-yard catch and then that 37-yard touchdown pass for Kenny Stills playing in his hand first game as a Texan.

It should have won the game, but with Brees on the opposing sideline, you never know. Even if he has just 37 seconds.

Nonetheless, the Texans must be encouraged with what they saw in Watson on Monday night. His offensive has fought throughout the game and they were so close to starting the 2019 season in the Victory Column.

Quote

"I knew it was in. I'm confident in my operation, I'm confident in what I do and all I wanted was salvation after that failure to get in to go halfway, and that's what it's all about. "

These were the words that Lutz spoke to ESPN after his game-winning field goal. He had the opportunity to reduce the deficit to a single-digit amount towards the end of the second quarter, but missed the 56-yard attempt, which heightened the concern that made up the entire first half of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

These kickers live for salvation, and Lutz managed to save his name on Monday night on a grand scale.

According to statistics from STATS Lutz was the first NFL player to score two field goals in the final 50 seconds of regulation since Cincinnati Bengals kicker Doug Pelfrey scored two goals in the last three seconds of Christmas Eve in 1994 .

What's next?

The Saints travel west to face defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams. This is the first time the two teams have faced each other since the Saints lost at home in the NFC Conference Championship. Everyone wants to continue from this moment, but they will talk a lot about that next week.

The Rams won against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday 30-27. They did not play well, but Sean McVay's play calls were still very impressive and enough to get the job done.

The Texans are hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars next week (13:00, CBS, stream on CBS All Access), a team that has already lost quarterback Nick Foles. The former Philadelphia Eagle broke his collarbone on his Jaguar debut and will be out of action for at least half of the 2019 season.

Rookie Gardner Minshew will be racing for Jacksonville, completing 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and an interception of the 40-26 loss suffered by the Kansas City Chiefs. All in all, it was not a terrible performance, and the jaguars are clearly not the pushovers they had in 2018.
