Late on Tuesday (August 28), a fireball illuminated the sky above the Australian city of Perth. He reportedly created a powerful shockwave that shook homes in the area – and some observers heard the dramatic event on video.
Perth's fire and the emergency room today began receiving calls via the meteor at 19:40 local time (7:40 am EDT and 1140 GMT), according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Several people recorded fireball videos with CCTV cameras and dash cams and sent the material to Perth Observatory.
"We heard the boom, we saw the light, we just thought it was a lightning bolt, but the boom after that was definitely not thunder," said Robyn Garratt, a York resident about 1
"In York, people felt much more than that," Garratt added. "They all ran outside and thought the sky would fall."
Meteors are incoming space rocks that hit the Earth's atmosphere and sometimes create a strong light show and / or shock waves that are detected by people on the ground. Any parts of this space rock that bring it to the ground are called meteorites. (A fireball is a meteor that shines brighter than Venus in the sky.)
Scientists at Curtin University in Perth are trying to find out, among other things, whether meteorites come from the fireball. With so many videos available, University researchers are working to triangulate observations to narrow down the search, said Phil Bland, director of the Curtin University-run Desert Fireball Network, ABC.
On CNN, Bland also gave advice on what such a meteorite would look like, for those looking for one. (He called on anyone who had found a meteorite to call him.)

The Earth is hit by space rocks every single day, ranging in size from tiny pebbles to much larger objects, while most of these effects are harmless, occasionally causing more meteor damage.
