19659018 ] Krakatau, a small group of islands in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java, is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, e a mostly submerged caldera with 3 outer marginal islands and a new c One of them, Anak Krakatau, which since 1927 forms a new island and is still very active.
Krakatau exploded spectacularly in a devastating Plinian eruption in 1883, killing more than 30,000 people (mainly due to the giant tsunamis triggered by the eruption). The outbreak was one of the first global news events after telegraph lines connected the various continents.
