Flu vaccines are free in SC at these locations, says DHEC

If you're a resident of South Carolina and you're more than 6 months old, you're eligible for a flu shot – for free.

The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control will offer free flu shots on Friday at three locations across the state, a press release said. The free vaccinations are offered in the Upstate (Greenville), the Midlands (Lexington) and the Lowcountry (North Charleston).

"Protecting your flu vaccine not only protects you but your entire family and community," DHEC Immunization Medical Advisor Tracy Foo said in the press release. "The last flu season has been one of the worst in recent years and highlights the importance of getting a flu vaccine."

During the last flu season, DHEC had 1

35,842 cases of influenza. Of this number, 4,551 people were hospitalized and 292 people died. This was a significant increase in deaths from the 177 people who died in the previous flu season.

Symptoms of flu can be sudden onset of fever, dry cough, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, sore throat and stuffy nose or constipation

The best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine, according to DHEC [19659002] Despite this recommendation, more than 61 percent of South Carolina residents last did not receive a flu vaccine season, according to a study by Insurance Quotes.

Overall, more than 80,000 people died of the flu last season. The majority of the deceased were over 65 years of age, according to the US Centers for Disease Control, which reported that the majority of Americans do not receive flu vaccine every year.

Adults 50 and older are among the groups "at increased risk of complications from the flu," DHEC reported. Others in danger include small children and pregnant women.

For those worried about the flu shot, the Mayo Clinic says that's not true. You can not get the flu from a flu shot.

"The flu shot is what we call a dead vaccine," Dr. Tina Ardon, a Mayo Clinic family medicine specialist. "The influenza vaccine is one of the best defense mechanisms we have."

According to DHEC, the vaccine needs about two weeks to build up the body's defenses against the virus, which together with the CDC and the Mayo Clinic urges people to get a flu shot
