Electronic artist Flying Lotus, singer and songwriter FKA twigs, Anglo-Indian jazz drummer Sarathy Korwar and synth-pop master Vince Clarke were among the big winners when the indie community met on Wednesday evening (August 12) Gathered for the 10th Annual AIM Independent Music Awards, held virtually for the first time.
Flying Lotus grabbed the best independent track (for “More” with Anderson .Paak) and Korwar’s Arrive more took out the best independent album.
“It is a real blessing to receive an award and be recognized in these times when we feel like our work is not essential and we are just doing whatever,” enthused Flying Lotus (real name) Steven Ellison). “So thank you for reminding me that what we do is very important.”
FKA branches also sagged best at night [difficult] second album critically praised for her MagdalenaMoses Boyd ranked 21st on the UK’s official album chart last November and made an independent breakthrough in the UK.
One of the moments the show was stolen was when Erasure reunited on stage for the premiere of their new single, Nerves of Steel. A fitting moment when songwriter and keyboardist Vince Clarke received the special recognition award, a new category. Clarke was hailed for his work in Erasure, Yazoo and Hall of Famers Depeche Mode and “his exceptional contribution to the synth-pop world,” say the organizers.
In the industry award categories, Helen Smith, chairwoman of the IMPALA independent music company lobby group, was named “Indie Champion,” and the great drummer Tony Allen was posthumously recognized for Outstanding Contribution to the Music Awards.
Allen’s career was celebrated with a performance starring Damon Albarn, front man for Blur and Gorillaz, and a separate tribute to Femi Koleoso of Ezra Collective.
Allen, a pioneering afrobeat drummer, died on April 30th in Paris at the age of 79, leaving a formidable legacy.
The Nigerian artist was known for his work with Fela Kuti and later with Albarn’s project The Good, The Bad & The Queen, the French electronic duo Air, and others.
At the time of his death, Brian hailed Eno Allen as “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived,” while Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers named him “one of the greatest drummers of all time on this earth”.
As part of the celebration of Allen’s life and work, Koleoso curated a special medley in which British jazz stars Nubya Garcia, Mutale Chashi, Tobi Adenaike, Elias Atkinson, Richie Seivwright, Deschanel Gordon and Junior Alli gathered, among others.
