Flynn sent Twitter direct messages to MP Matt Gaetz and encouraged the Florida Republican "to maintain pressure." It is not clear if Flynn has sent additional messages to other legislators.
"You keep track of what you are doing, your leadership is now critical to our country, and keep up the pressure," said Flynn in a April 2018 announcement to Gaetz, which was received by CNN.
In the evening, Flynn sent word to Gaetz that lawmakers had appeared in "Lou Dobbs Tonight" by Fox Business, where he criticized Mueller's investigation.
"We must play a far stronger role in detecting the hypocrisy in the Ministry of Justice," Gaetz said in his appearance on April 3, 201
At the same time Flynn Gaetz sent the direct message.
Gaetz also received a message in February this year. On the day that Attorney General William Barr was confirmed, Flynn Gaetz sent GIFs of a bald eagle and an American flag without an accompanying text.
Gaetz, who demanded Mueller's resignation and was among the most vocal critics of the Special Representative, confirmed that he had received the news but said he had not responded. Gaetz had no relationship with Flynn, he said.
The messages raise new questions about Flynn's contact with the politically powerful after his guilty commitment to the miller's probe. They contribute to a perception that has emerged in Flynn's trial and that he modulated between the support of the Special Representative and the fomenting of Müller's critics in the Republican Party.
Flynn's collaboration with Mueller is back in the limelight after Thursday's unsealed court records revealed that Flynn had told the Special Envoy that "people associated with the administration or the congress" had contacted him – and one Advocate for President Donald Trump had even left him a voicemail – and possibly tried to influence his willingness to cooperate. Mueller told Flynn that he had been contacted, and the Special Representative asked a judge last year to consider not sending Flynn to prison for his crime because he had been so helpful.
Flynn's revelations to Mueller raised the possibility that Trump or others around the president might have tried to obstruct justice with Flynn's reach. However, Müller did not address this possibility in either the new Flynn complaint or in his final report on a possible impediment to justice.
Instead, Mueller said he could not determine if Trump had instructed his personal lawyer to leave a voicemail for Flynn's lawyer, which was about concluding a plea deal.
Flynn's lawyer declined to comment on Friday.
Gaetz attacked Mueller
Flynn remained silent in public almost completely since he pleaded guilty to lying to detectives in December 2017 – and lies continue to lie to you because he has not was convicted.
However, the Twitter news shows that he had made his own contact with at least one lawmaker who attacked the Special Representative's inquiries and reinforced Trump's message that the Special Representative inquiry was a joke and a "witch hunt".
Gaetz introduced a resolution in 2017 in which he called for the resignation of Müller. He led a vocal group of Republicans who sharply criticized the legitimacy of the Special Representative and urged an investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe.
Gaetz is also a regular guest on the Fox News television station, something that the President often addresses when they speak, Gaetz said last year.
While Gaetz says he had no connection with Flynn, he called on the president to issue a pardon to Flynn and other targets of the miller's probe last year. "If I were President Trump, I would apologize to Paul Manafort, I would convert Michael Flynn's sentence and be done with these two," Gaetz said in an interview with Fox News.
It is unclear which person associated with Congress was named contact to Flynn in the court records filed on Thursday. The Washington Post reported Thursday that the Trump administration person who contacted Flynn was former Trump lawyer John Dowd. Dowd does not respond to CNN's comment request.
According to court records, Flynn told Muller about the talks and gave the Special Envoy a voicemail record of one of the talks that a federal judge wanted to have publicized.
Politics and Cooperation
The Twitter news could complicate Flynn's situation in court.
In December 2018, Flynn went before Judge Emmet Sullivan at the US District Court in DC with a milder conviction proposal from prosecutors than any other defendant by Muller – little or no jail sentence. Nevertheless, Sullivan resorted to a legal statement written by Flynn's lawyers stating that the FBI agents had stalled in their approach to him. In this letter, Flynn seemed to sympathize with the Republicans' attacks on the FBI agents he had lied to during a White House meeting.
At his December hearing, Sullivan asked if Flynn had taken responsibility for his crime. Flynn said "I was aware" that it was a crime to lie to the FBI.
Flynn ordered the judge to postpone his conviction while continuing to cooperate on other federal matters, and a new date has not been set.
