Teeth play an important role in digestion because they are at the beginning of the whole process.
In order to keep teeth strong and healthy, nutrition is important to promote bone health.
Calcium plays an important role in bone health. Most people think of milk and other dairy products to get calcium, but there are many more options. Dark, green leafy vegetables like broccoli and kale are a good source. Some seeds and nuts, such as chia, sesame and almonds, also provide calcium. Many foods are fortified with calcium, such as milk and grains.
In order for our body to absorb calcium and use it for bone health, we need Vitamin D. This vitamin is found in fatty fish, such as salmon. and is also enriched in some foods. Look for food labels to see if foods are fortified. Our bodies need sun to process vitamin D, so it's good to get some sunshine.
A mineral involved in bone health is magnesium. This nutrient is also found in green leafy vegetables and seeds. Other sources include legumes, whole grains and avocado.
With the addition of these foods to your diet and some sunlight, bones, including teeth, have a better chance of staying strong and healthy.
