Unlike Tesla, Ford has not built this charging system independently. In collaboration with the EV charging companies Greenlots and Electrify America, Ford has developed the so-called FordPass Charging Network. When needed, users are directed to one of the network's chargers via an app or the vehicle's central touch screen.
Next year Ford will begin selling a Ford Mustang based electric crossover SUV. It is Ford's first vehicle designed from the beginning as an electric vehicle. This vehicle has not been revealed yet. An electric version of the Ford F-150 is also being developed.
The FordPass network will include more than 1
2,000 charging stations with a total of 35,000 plugs in the US and parts of Canada. According to the Department of Energy, Tesla has 4,375 public charging stations with about 15,000 plugs in the US. While Tesla's chargers can only be used by Tesla ( TSLA )
vehicles, the Chargers on the FordPass network work with most other electric cars. Unlike the Tesla Chargers, all operated by Tesla, the chargers in the FordPass network are operated by different companies. The charging network includes fast-charging devices that can quickly charge a vehicle's battery to approximately 80% in about 40 minutes in some cases. While the chargers work with many different cars, only Ford drivers can use the Ford Pass app.
Ford ( F ) Owners of electric vehicles can pay to charge through the app without having to log in separately to individual charging networks. Greenlots, a subsidiary of Shell, runs the software behind the app.
Electrify America is building its charging system for electric cars with money from an agreement that Volkswagen has reached with US regulators over the automaker's diesel emission scandal. According to a Greenlots spokeswoman, more network operators are expected to join the network. Ford also announced with Amazon ( AMZN ) home services to install at home-loaders for customers who buy a Ford electric vehicle. Most owners of electric cars charge their cars most of the time at home or at work. Public Chargers, as used in the FordPass Charging Network, are mainly used for longer road trips.
At the beginning of the year General Motors announced ( GM ) The construction company Bechtel worked out a plan to build a large network of public chargers throughout America.
