One thing Ford seems to have learned from Tesla is that boring electric vehicles can not be sold.
Prices for more basic versions of Mach-E start at around $ 45,000. The most expensive version will be the Mach-E GT Performance Edition, which starts at around $ 60,000. These prices are similar to those of Tesla's Model Y, which will be between $ 47,000 and $ 60,000.
Ford's electric vehicles qualify for the time being for the tax credit in the amount of 7,500 US dollars. They expect Mach e-buyers to receive this full tax credit for at least the first year they are available.
Ford expects Extended Range versions of the Mach-E with 332 hp to receive an EPA-rated range of at least 300 miles. The standard-range version will drive approximately 379 kilometers on one charge, said Ted Cannis, Ford's director of electrification. (Prototypes are still being tested and developed.)
Even with this standard battery pack, Mach-E will accelerate faster than a Porsche Macan SUV, according to Cannis. (In general, longer-range batteries also provide more power.) The Mustang Mach-E is equipped with a rear-wheel drive in the two-wheel drive version like the Mustang Coupé, which it is modeled after. The rear-wheel drive is considered ideal for a performance-oriented vehicle. Overall, the Mach-E will have the best driving dynamics ever to feature a Ford SUV, Cannis claimed.
"It's a fucking rock star," he said.
Since there is no engine, electric vehicles do not require a long bonnet, but the Mustang Mach-E has one. This is a classic performance design cue, but also helps maintain the similarity of the Mustang family. It also has a black roof, no matter what color the rest of the car is painted, creating the illusion of a low roofline. The taillights are distributed horizontally to improve the perception of the width. The vehicle looks more planted and stable than a sports car.
Unlike most electric cars, the Mach-E even makes a distinctively audible noise, as Ford designers say the sound is an important part of the Mustang experience. The Mach-E, however, does not make a V8 sound. The artificially generated sound heard both inside and outside the vehicle varies according to the acceleration and speed of the Mach-E as an actual engine noise. The Mach-E sound resembles an intensified electric motor humming but with a hint of rumble.
The SUV has three selectable driving modes: Whisper, Engaged and Unbridled. Things like the response of the steering wheel and accelerator pedal and the interior lighting of the vehicle, the graphic design of the displays and the volume of the engine noise change according to the selected mode.
The Mustang Mach-E also has a huge central touchscreen, similar to the screens in a Tesla. Unlike other touchscreens, the Mach-E has a volume control on the screen. That was one thing, found Ford designers, for whom people really favored a knob.
The Mach-E has no traditional door handles or, moreover, door handles on the back. The doors are unlocked with electronic buttons. The front doors also have tiny black wing-like protrusions that open the door with your fingers.
Like Tesla, the Mach-E can also receive wireless software updates to improve performance and entertainment options
The Mach-E, which is being built in Mexico, will be available next fall, according to Ford. The GT Performance Edition will be available in spring 2021. However, anyone interested in buying a Mach-E in Europe and the US can immediately make a refundable deposit of $ 500.
