A senior executive from Fordham University, who climbed up the campus's famous bell tower, died in a tragic accident on Sunday morning.
22-year-old Sydney Monfries dropped through an opening in a landing in Keating Hall and crashed down into the clock and clock tower, according to the New York City Police Department. The case was about 30 feet, CNN reports citing school officials. Monfries was critically injured and later died.
The Tower on the Bronx in New York, campus, is closed to students and locked at night, according to the university.
"There are no words to describe the loss of such a young and promising person – and only a few weeks after graduation," said University President Rev. Joseph M. McShane in a statement.
Fordham University student newspaper, The Observer reported that boarding the tower before graduation is a sort of walkthrough.
Monfries released a video of the spire titled "Bell Tower" on early Sunday, reports The New York Times.
McShane said Monfries' bachelor's degree will be presented to her parents.
Authorities investigate how Monfries gained access to the tower.
