Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro: A new problem is blocking Netflix in HD

Netflix DRM issues with Xiaomi smartphones are not permanently fixed. The Redmi Note 8 Pro can not play videos in HD. The problem could be solved by an update.

Netflix on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro

The problem of DRM with Netflix is back to Xiaomi. While we thought the case had been closed since the beginning of the year, the arrival of the Redmi Note 8 Pro in France shows that not everything is yet developed between the Chinese manufacturer and the famous American service. So far, the Redmi Note 8 Pro can not play video on Netflix in HD.

A History of DRM

A few years ago, OnePlus and then Xiaomi struck a problem of DRM management on their devices. In short, to play videos of paid services in HD, a smartphone needs to certify Google's Widevine L1

. If a smartphone is only "Widevine L3", it can access MyCanal or Netflix, but only to play videos in SD in reduced quality.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a problem with Netflix

This weekend we released our review of Redmi Note 8 Pro, a smartphone with an excellent price-performance ratio and that will certainly be a success this year. Commenting on the test, Laurent Akn says the smartphone " does not have the Netflix certification to play the videos in HD ". However, a test with the application DRM Info shows us that the smartphone is to our knowledge, as all smartphones that Xiaomi since the beginning of 2019 sold in France, Google is certified as Widevine L1.

Further verifying that the Redmi Note 8 Pro is actually hardware level certified as Widevine L1, Netflix initially recognizes the smartphone as a Widevine L3 device, blocking any attempt to play in HD. A height at which the application is preinstalled on the phone. According to our tests, Amazon Prime Video has the same problem, while MyCanal offers HD playback with Widevine L1.

A software update could solve the problem.

These tests show that the smartphone is beautiful and well certified Widevine L1, and therefore the problem is the applications in question, including Netflix. This means that this problem can be solved by a software update. Some users of the XDA Developers Forum also offer modified versions of the Netflix application that allow you to skip DRM reviews for Widevine L1 certified devices.

However, installing these applications is not recommended: You never know exactly which contributors changed or failed in the application, or how Netflix might respond. However, we ran the test on our site and the modified application was good for reading a HD stream on Netflix.

We asked Xiaomi France and Netflix France about this issue, including the question of whether a fix is planned, and we are now waiting for their answer. For our part, we are updating our test to reflect this new information.
