The official said a woman filed a complaint against the French film star Monday near the southern city of Aix-en-Provence. The case was assigned to the Paris prosecutor on Wednesday.
The officer requested anonymity in discussing the case on Thursday, as he was unable to disclose details of an ongoing investigation.
Depardieu's lawyer, Herve Temime, said on France's BFM TV that the actors "absolutely deny any rape, any sexual assault, any crime."
Depardieu was "shaken" by the "groundless" charges, Temime said. The lawyer declined to say whether Depardieu was in France on Thursday, or more details about the actor's connection with the woman identified by the French media as a 22-year-old comedian and dancer.
"He will obviously attend the investigation and answer the questions," Temime said.
