Thousands of years before the events of "Game of Thrones," Goldman's project documents the descent of the world from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is certain: from the horrifying secrets of Westero's history to the true origin of white wanderers, the mysteries of the East, to the strong of legend – it is not the story that we believe to know.
Goldman initiated the project together with George R. R. Martin, whose novel series "A Song of Ice and Fire" serves as the basis for "Game of Thrones". Goldman and Martin wrote the story while Goldman wrote the teleplay. She will also serve as a showrunner. She and Martin will produce together with Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray and "Game of Thrones" Executive Producer Vince Gerardis. Chris Symes becomes co-executive producer.
Goldman's series is one of five "Game of Thrones" projects underway at HBO. The exact nature of each project's plot was kept top secret, although Martin has previously made it clear that each project is more of a prequel than a spinoff, and that none of the show's current protagonists will be involved. He has also ruled out fan theories that each of them will focus on his characters Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon the Unwahrprobely, or Dunk and Egg, as they are popularly called. He also said that Robert's rebellion will not be the subject of one of the prequels.
