Gears of War returns with its fifth major installment, and the end of Gears 5 completes an exciting campaign. As expected, the mission in this fifth iteration of the main series is extremely high, with the fate of the remaining human settlements on the line against the raging swarm hordes.
Even though the fate of Sera is at stake, Gears 5 covers more than the big picture. The coalition manages to sometimes tell a deeply personal story that picks up not only the story of Gears of War as a whole, but also the story of the main character Kait Diaz. All in all, this is an excellent entry in the series, taking many risks.

Still, it is not easy to bring together personal introspection, deep conspiracy, and the threat of world-sweeping swarming spirits. Fortunately, Gears 5 manages to reconcile these larger themes and smaller arcs. Read on to explain exactly how the end of Gears 5 comes together.
Big Secrets Uncovered
Some of the most important revelations of Gears 5 happen much earlier in the game and some of them play heavily in the exciting finale. In particular, the elements that relate to Kait's story – and that of her family – are extremely important until the end of the title.
Long-time Fans Gears of War will no doubt remember the Locust. the antagonists of Xbox 360 games. The exact source of this threat was never really explained until the shocking revelation that the locust was actually created by COG itself, through a series of secret experiments with children by Niles Samson. Queen Myrrah was one of those successful experiments and is the grandmother of Kait.
This explained the connection Kait had with the swarm, along with the deep, dark secrets that had long gone undetected. In addition, Kait's mother Reyna – whose separation from Myrrah (and presumed death) was one of the reasons for the original grasshopper war – is not as dead as it originally seemed. Although her human mind is no longer really there, her form is used as the queen of the flock.
Making a difficult choice
Fortunately, after a swarming attack by the swarm, Kait and the gang have some firepower to shoot. The Hammer of the Dawn is back online and literally blows pieces from the opposition, albeit with a slight caveat. Kait and Delta Squad must set up beacons to target the malevolent swarms.
Everything seems to be going well – at least as the events of a game of Gears of War really can be – until there is a shocking twist on the books. It turns out that the swarm has a new queen, and this queen is Kait's mother Reyna. Reyna was last seen in Gears of War 4 in a flock and killed by Kait to prevent their assimilation. However, this clearly did not stop the transformation. Instead, Reyna now acted as a ship for the hive.
With the swarm's released power, Reyna is able to easily take control of the situation, grabbing JD and Del and leaving Kait spread out on the ground. Kait then has the chance to save only one, with the other broken by the queen's neck as the two remaining survivors flee the scene.
A dramatic escape
Kait and the other surviving group lose their weapons and are temporarily buried underground in the ruins of a building in Old Ephyra before they erupt and reappear to take action. It was not long before they met Fahz and Marcus Fenix and spread the bad news about which character had been the deciding factor in the previous scene. From there, it's time to step out of the evasive maneuver with the destroyed Hammer of Dawn beacon.
That's easier said than done. For starters, the gang is followed by herds of swarms, the leeches are gone and hungry for blood. Shortly thereafter, they return to the core forces of the COG and are ready to regroup with the help of people like Cole. As the swarm takes over, they defend a final ditch and throw each soldier under the sun COG troops who fight back with well-mounted towers.
As so often in Gears of War it gets worse again. The Swarm's Kraken, who was first encountered in Gears 5 in the red sand of Vasgar while trying to stop the rocket launch that brought the Hammer of Dawn back online, reappears on to destroy preliminary plans. From here begins the final battle of Gears 5 .
The Final Fight
As expected, the Kraken proves to be an intimidating final opponent. Initially, Kait and Company held it in the same way as in the previous Fracas and fired at what glowed the most to stop the attack. With large rail guns kept in check, it still seems as if the Kraken would eventually defeat the last survivors.
That was a moment ago of the ingenuity of the robot companion Jack. Although the Hammer of the Dawn was taken offline by the flock's previous attack, Jack avoids the need to aim for beacons by shooting his own coordinates onto the Hammer of the Dawn and flying into the grotesque throat of the Kraken. The Kraken is destroyed with another angry ray of the almighty weapon – and Jack is taken away.
From there it is time to record the parts. There was a tragic death of one of the main characters, the world is in ruins, and though one of the fiercest creatures in the swarm's army has been defeated, the revelation of a new queen means the swarm remains a serious threat. Kait promises to defeat the swarm once and for all and prepare for an explosive sequel without a doubt.
All in all, it's a pretty strong ending to a very impressive campaign. Although some fans have hoped for some more close and a less obvious refresher on the next game, Gears 5 still manages to give fans plenty of answers to the Gears of War story altogether , Hopefully, Gang 6 will offer fans a correspondingly powerful next chapter.
