Gene Link to Arthritis – The Hindu

Researchers in the US have discovered a gene associated with the severity of the disease in models of rheumatoid arthritis. The discovery may not only provide a new route to treatment, but also a way to measure the prognosis of patients diagnosed with autoimmune disease. The gene was discovered in experiments on synovial cells from the inner lining of joints in humans and animals and also in animal models with arthritis severity. This is the first time that the gene, HIP1, has been linked to the severity of arthritis and cell invasiveness. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition that can lead to disability and deformity of the joints, affecting about 1

% of the world's population. Currently available drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis target the immune response of the body, but increase the risk of immunosuppression and susceptibility to infections such as herpes zoster and pneumonia. The findings were published online in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases .
