JERUSALEM (AP) – The foundation behind the prestigious Genesis Prize says this year's award winner Natalie Portman has withdrawn from the awards ceremony in Israel in June and quoted a representative of the US actress as saying the recent events in Israel are "extremely embarrassing for them."
The Genesis Prize Foundation says Portman "does not feel comfortable participating in public events in Israel."
The late Thursday statement did not refer to specific events. Israel has been criticized for its reaction to mass protests at the Israeli-Israeli border, which has seen 28 Palestinians killed and hundreds injured by Israeli fire since 30 March. Israel says it defends its border.
The Foundation says it fears Portman's decision "to cause our philanthropic initiative to become politicized."
The award honors Jewish achievements and contributions to humanity.
