Georgia Tech will take over the field for the first time with Geoff Collins as head coach. Clemson will open the field for the second time in three seasons as defending champion.
Clemson climbs to # 1 in the Associated Press media poll. Last season, the Tigers made their fourth appearance in the College Football Playoff with a 44-16 win over Alabama in the championship game.
Collins came to the Flats to succeed Paul Johnson, who (at least) retired for the first time) after 11 seasons. Collins, a former Tech Assistant, was a Temple trainer from 2017 to 2017 and set a 15-10 record. The Owls took second place last season at the American Athletic Conference.
Tech enters the season with a revised attack and switches from a "spread option" to a "spread pro style". Most of all, as a result of this change, Tech is entering the season with low expectations from media members across the country and most other college football observers. Much of these expectations stem from the assumption that Tech does not have the staff to effectively handle the new offense. A game against No. 1
