Geostorm seen for North USA, Canada, Aurora Borealis

A geostorm on Friday may give people in the northern United States and Canada the chance to see the Aurora Borealis from there.

On March 21, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a geostorm warning from March 22 to 24, due to a solar flare on March 20. The Geostorm warnings for those dates are as follows: G1 for March 22, G2 for March 23, and G1 for March 24.

This means that the solar flare on Friday night, March 22, until the early morning of Saturday, March 23, bends around the earth's magnetic field and hits the poles. As a result, the northern lights will charge and go deeper.

Although this may result in minor power outages for some high frequency radio signals and navigation signals, it may also be possible for some people to see the north lights.

Northern Lights in America

With the Geostorm warning, people in the northern United States may be able to see the northern lights when conditions permit. In clear and dark skies, people in Canada, North Dakota, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Montana, Michigan, Vermont and Maine can watch the Northern Lights while those in Detroit and Chicago can see it is on the horizon.

The light show is best viewed at three to four hours at midnight, but those living in light-polluted places may find it harder. The bright moon on Friday may also make it a bit more difficult.

It is called Aurora Borealis in the north and can be seen in parts of the northwest of Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, Norway and Siberia, while the Aurora Australis is not often seen in the south as it is concentrated over the Antarctic and Antarctic southern Indian Ocean.
