Ghana Police Department spokesman David Eklu said the accident occurred around 1:30 am on Friday morning when the two long-distance buses collided on the main road that led from Kintampo to Tamale, Ghana's fourth-largest city.
"The buses went up in flames when they collided," Eklu said.
"It's too early to determine how many died, but fifty people were declared dead."
He said both buses have about 100 people on board Some victims died.
Eklu added that more than 50 people were injured The number of victims of the victims is informed although most of them have not yet been identified.
Injured passengers were sent to the inmates of the Techiman Holy Family Hospital and the government of Kintampo Hospital for treatment, he said.
The crash occurred almost half way along the planned 390 kilometers (242 miles) journey from Kumasi to Tamale.
