Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani will not say if he has a government security clearance, as the question arises of what kind of work he undertook in Ukraine to advance the president's policy goals.
The question of what type of permit Giuliani might have was raised Thursday at a hearing by National Secretary Joseph Maguire, which focused in part on convincing Giuliani, on behalf of Trump, of convincing the Ukrainian government against Joe Biden and his colleagues investigate Son Hunter's most dubious abuse of allegations of power.
After a question from Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL), whether Giuliani had a release, Maguire said he did not know. At the beginning of the session, he said that it was crucial for those who are pursuing US foreign policy overseas to receive government approval.
"To deal with sensitive information, be it diplomatic or secure intelligence information. you have to be checked, "Maguire said. "This is the important part of the protection of national security. We can not just bring people in and automatically wave a wand to give them holy water and give them the security clearance. It's a question of verification. "
Giuliani, who reached an opinion within a few hours of the hearing, evaded several attempts to have a security clearance. Instead, the former New York mayor said in a text message that he "never received classified information."
After asking The Daily Beast if Giuliani has a security clearance, he again refused to answer.
"Never mind, do not hunt further irrelevant information," Giuliani wrote in another text message.
Security checks are typically only granted to individuals who need the associated access to work for the government in a specific role, according to national security attorney and security reviewer Bradley P. Moss. Lawyers representing former or current government employees may also receive permits for their legal work, Moss added. A partner of Moss, Mark Zaid, represents the whistleblower who first expressed concerns about the work of Guiliani and Trump in the Ukraine. although Moss itself is not.
If Giuliani has a security clearance, Moss said it is "unlikely" that he has undergone the formal review.
"If granted access to classified information, it is likely that this was done by direct order of the President, who can grant access to anyone he wants," Moss said.
As part of his work for Trump Giuliani, he has reportedly met with representatives of the Ukrainian president and the country's top prosecutor. The plans and meetings were apparently designed to urge Ukraine to investigate the biden and pursue right-wing conspiracy theories about the origins of the Justice Department's investigation into Russia's relations with the 201
When asked about his impression of Giuliani's role, Maguire expressed his confusion.
"Congressman Quigley, my only knowledge of what Mr Giuliani is doing, I have to be honest with you, I get from TV and the news media," he said. "I'm not aware of what he does for the president."
