GM to urge Cadillac to rival the Tesla

General Motors will make Cadillac its first EVV electric vehicle under the BEV3 platform, according to unnamed sources talking to Reuters. The electric Cadillac will become Tesla's flagship GM challenger, sources said.

According to sources, an announcement is expected today, but details such as timeline and specifications are unlikely to be announced. GM has previously tried to make plug-in hybrids under the Cadillac brands, but these were poorly sold and discontinued after only a few years of production.

GM's current EV portfolio includes the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid, and the Bolt, a purely electric vehicle. However, the mass-market brand Chevrolet can not stand up to Tesla, which has cornered the luxury EV market. Cadillac, on the other hand, could be a worthy opponent.

The largest car maker in the United States two years ago announced plans for the production of electric vehicles. This included the construction of their own electric vehicle architecture and the launch by 2021

together with a battery system. The two will be used to develop 20 new electric models in the US and China, the world's largest electric vehicle market.

Also in 2017, Marry Barra's CEO, General Motors, planned to launch at least ten new electric vehicles for Chinese consumers last year. Barra said the company would achieve sales of € 1 million a year by 2026 , with a significant portion of the total sold in China.

Last year, General Motors in China opened a battery factory partnership with local automaker SAIC Motor Corp. as part of its expansion plans for the Chinese market.

Last year, the then president of Cadillac told Reuters. Cadillac will play a "central role" in GM's GM strategy not only in the domestic market but also in China. Sales of Cadillac in China are increasing, with the number exceeding 200,000 for the first time last year, Reuters reports.
