While exercise and diet are integral parts of weight, there can be certain optimizations that can make you look better. And unlike diets that lead you to extremes and cause you to fast or eat only one food a day, this new study asks you to just chew chewing gum.
A team of Japanese researchers reveals that the key to losing weight can be as simple as chewing gum when walking. They conducted experiments in which they found that the heart rate of 46 people, aged 21 to 69 years, increased when they chewed gum while walking at a natural pace. Previous research has shown that chewing gum increases the heart rate and energy expenditure in the elderly.
And while chewing caused a measurable physical difference in both sexes and all age groups, it was most pronounced in men over 40 at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna.
"The combination of exercise and chewing gum can be an effective weight management method," said the researchers. This is very important in countries like Japan, where running is the most prevalent movement. This was the first study to investigate their effects on people walking, the authors said.
The combination of exercise and chewing gum can be an effective weight control method.
How the study was conducted
Volunteers completed two running tests, each lasting 15 minutes. In one they chewed two chewing gum pellets containing three kilocalories. In the other, for comparison, they went after taking a powder containing the same ingredients as the chewing gum.
The team then measured the resting and walking frequency of the two legs as well as the distance they traveled at one hour of natural speed, pace and the number of steps. In all participants, the mean heart rate in the gum test was "significantly higher," the researchers said.
In men over 40, walking distance, number of steps and energy consumption increased. The team speculated that the reason might have something to do with "cardio-motor synchronization," a natural phenomenon in which the heart beats to the rhythm of a repetitive motion.
