Google will soon be killing Hangouts, the company's infamous messaging app. 9to5Google reports that the company will end Hangouts in 2020.
The company's long-neglected app is still in the new Gmail. The mobile apps for the service, however, continue to show signs of age. Google is reported to be keeping Hangouts alive with its Hangouts chat and Hangouts Meet apps available through G Suite.
Google has been experimenting with a number of other messaging apps since Hangouts, and it's almost as a joke. The company still makes Allo, which has never really gotten its way, and recently it started with the new Chat / Android Messages app, which looks almost like Android iMessage.
If Google (hopefully) continues to invest in RCS and chat / android messages: It's clear that no hangouts or even allo are needed, and the company that drops the service makes a lot of sense. I'm just not sure why it will wait until 2020 to turn it off.
