Google Hangouts will officially retire for G Suite customers in October, and Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet will take its place as a next generation tool for team communications. Individual customers may continue to use Google Hangouts, possibly by 2020.
As of April 16, G Suite users will be able to use chat online and through phone applications. Users can also disable the classic Google Hangouts before October at any time. The Hangouts Settings page is renamed Hangouts Meet. The blog post recommends users switch to Chat and Meet between April and September of this year.
This comes after Google announced in November to kill Hangouts in 2020. In 2017, Google said Hangouts had been "evolved" to focus on Meet, a videoconferencing feature, and chat, a messaging platform, and slack competitors.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether Google Hangouts will be phased out for all users in 2020.
