The young activist accused the negotiators assembled in Katowice of enacting rules for the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2015 – to give up future generations. "They say they love their kids about everything and yet they are stealing their future with their own eyes," Thunberg said in a speech to the participants on Wednesday.
My name is Greta Thunberg. I'm 1
I speak on behalf of Climate Justice Now.
People say Sweden is just a small country and it does not matter what we do.
But I've learned that you're never too small to make a difference.
And if some kids all over the world can make headlines when they're not going to school, then imagine what we could all do together if we really wanted to. But to do that, we have to speak clearly, no matter how unpleasant that may be.
You're just talking about green eternal economic growth because you're too scared to be unpopular. You're just talking about getting on with the same bad ideas that got us into this mess, even if the only sensible thing is to pull the emergency brake.
You are not mature enough to say that it is so. Even this burden let us children. But I do not mind being popular. I am interested in climate justice and the living planet.
Our civilization is being sacrificed to give a very small number of people the opportunity to continue to earn enormous sums of money.
Our biosphere is being sacrificed so rich people in countries like mine can live in luxury. It is the suffering of the many who pay for the luxury of the few.
In the year 2078 I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children, maybe they will spend the day with me. Maybe they ask me about you. Maybe they'll ask why you did nothing while there was still time to act.
They say they love their children above all else, yet they steal their future from their eyes.
Until you focus on what needs to be done, not on what is politically possible, there is no hope. We can not solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis.
We must keep the fossil fuels in the ground and focus on justice. And if solutions within the system are so hard to find, maybe we should change the system itself.
We did not come here to interest the world leaders. They have ignored us in the past, and you will ignore us again.
We have no more excuses and time is running out.
We've come to inform you about this change, whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people.
