Right now you can download and play Halo Online mod ElDewrito. The Updater is still available on the Mod website and player-hosted servers are still online. But you would not know the mood in the halo community of confusion and anger since Halo developer 343 Industries has issued a statement that Microsoft is taking legal action to protect its intellectual property. Since that statement landed on Tuesday, things are escalating fast. Microsoft has begun with DMCAing twitch streams and YouTube videos showing Halo Online, which apparently even surprised 343.
That surprised us. We're working to better understand the intent here and have contacted MSFT and Twitch directly. The goal seems to be to prevent Halo Online from streaming, but we do not want people being banned ̵1; please avoid streaming Halo online content. April 25, 2018
Update: Microsoft Responded To Our Request For a comment on streamers temporarily banned by Twitch, we've reached the following: "We've contacted several content creators, possibly Stormers should not send Halo online content gameplay, because the code for Halo Online, as previously shared, is never lawful for any Halo Online streaming, as we did not want people to be blocked was released or authorized for this purpose and would likely violate Twitch's community policies. "
Watch on Twitter, Discord or Twitch Chats and you'll see fans complain that Microsoft is downing ElDewrito. Others claim that Halo's online assets were open-source after the end of development, so the project should continue to be free. And many more say that Microsoft is simply following the project because it has become more popular than its own Halo games.
None of the above is true, even though Halo Online had up to one point more viewers on Twitch than Halo 5, and thousands of players gathered in the last week. The ElDewrito mod itself is not the target of Microsoft's complaint – at least not yet.
"There was no stopping and dropping, no DMCA, just a quick talk about what they're suggesting" ElDewrito Blog . "Our conversation with 343 was very short, because ElDewotro itself is simply an open-source mod and not a Microsoft asset, the mod itself is not removed, but it does appear that all the Microsoft assets are required to play the game (MS23 builds, Full 0.6 spins, ect) will probably be taken by Microsoft. All we know is that [we] was said to temporarily stop development until more information becomes available, and we must [19459015Pleasedonottakeanythreatsorbother343Industriesthistime"
This request has fallen on deaf ears on the ElDewrito Discord channel, where the attitude toward Microsoft remains hot and trolling dominates the chat. At the time of publishing this article, the server has more than 8000 members.
Twitch streamers who receive 24-hour bans to stream a game they did not know were taboo are also upset.
Halo Online existed without problems for years. Hundreds of others are pouring it, but I'm getting the legal action against me. I also removed the videos from YouTube. The first suspension in more than 8 years of content creation feelbadman. April 25, 2018
Twitch has also recommended against streaming Halo Online:
Creators FYI: Urgently discourages creating videos or the streaming gameplay of Halo Online Party Eldewrito mod) April 25, 2018
But there are still many streams, and fans want to share links where others can still find and download the Halo online assets that Microsoft shut down. The ElDrewrito 0.6 Mod itself is still easily accessible and was already host for more than 200,000 games . While it is possible that the controversy and fear of legal action will disrupt the development of ElDewrito indefinitely, all the files necessary to play Halo Online are widely used. It is likely that it will not stop now.
