After almost three months of mystery about his intentions, flattened by recent public commentary suggesting he's not nearly as good for football as he needs to be, Rob Gronkowski suddenly has his Football promise renewed. What made him do this?
Peter King from SI.com has a very interesting theory. The patriots needed to know what Gronkowski was up to before the draft, since they may have to design his successor if they do not know what he's doing. This part was pretty obvious; Here goes on Peter (and I think straight to the heart of the matter): If Gronkowski had given no obligation to play in 2018, coach Bill Belichick might have traded Gronk before or during the draft.
Gronkowski could theoretically still be traded. And now that he's committed to playing in 2018, it may be easier to do it. Of course, Gronkowski could change his mind about the game if he suddenly lands in a new city. On the other hand, if another team is ready to give it a raise over the $ 8 million it will make in 2018, then perhaps in 2018 and beyond, it will be even more inclined to gamble.
