HBO Films buys Sundance film "Native Son" variety

HBO Films acquired "Native Son" on Thursday evening before the premiere of the Sundance Film Festival.

The news is surprising because the adaptation of Wright's famous novel has entered the festival with theater distribution. It should be published by A24. Instead, "Native Son" will debut on the premium cable channel sometime in 201

9. The film follows a young African American man named Bigger Thomas, who takes on a job with the powerful Chicago family – a move that has tragic and unforeseen consequences.

"Native Son" is the debut of visual artist Rashid Johnson and was written for screen by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks ("Topdog / Underdog"). Performers include Ashton Sanders, Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, KiKi Layne, Elizabeth Marvel, David Alan Grier and Bill Camp. Bow + Arrow Entertainment financed and produced the film.

A24 previously worked with HBO on "2 Dope Queens" and the upcoming drama series "Euphoria". At a time when the theater market for indie films is shrinking, the studio has shown a willingness to try new things. In November, A24 worked with Apple to produce a series of films for the tech giant. Since 2013, there is a partnership with DirecTV to acquire images together.

The A24 credits include the Oscar-winning "Moonlight" as well as the hits "Eighth Grade" and "Lady Bird".
