A Henry County officer shot dead in a dentist's office three weeks ago during a fight with a man has died, police said Friday morning. Policeman Michael Smith died of complications from a patient at 4:30 am at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. The gunshot wound occurred on December 6, according to Henry County Police. He was 33 years old.
"Please keep the Smith family in your prayers," a spokesperson for the department said in a statement. "Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming."

Smith, a three-year-old boy's father and a seven-year veteran with the troupe, was shot in the face during a fight with a man at a dentist's office near McDonough. A single shot wounded Smith critically, killing 53-year-old man DiMaggio McNelly.

He was treated at the Grady Memorial Hospital before being sent to the Shepherd Center for rehab.
It was not until Saturday when Henry was chief of police Mark Amerman said Smith's condition improved and he showed signs of progress.
"Yesterday, he took 10 steps, which is really encouraging," Amerman said in a video posted on Facebook. "Her thoughts and prayers that go to him are greatly appreciated. I want you to know that it works.

Amerman also announced that Smith's wife, Erin, was recovering from a recent fear in Piedmont when she visited Smith at Shepherd Center. After the fall and the blow with the head she had needed an emergency operation, and the doctors had found in a investigation blood clots, he said.
A GoFundMe site to raise money for Smith and his family has exceeded $ 20,000.
Smith is the sixth Georgian officer to be killed in 2018 as part of his service. His death is the death of DeKalb police officer Edgar Isidro on Dec. 13 Flores, who was fatally shot dead during a traffic stop on the Candler Road.
