Danny Amendola was open to signing with the New England Patriots It sounds as if that was his preference.
In the end, the difference in contract offers was just too big.
Amendola, who signed a $ 12 million two-year contract with the Miami Dolphins last month, told Mike Reiss of ESPN.com that Miami's offer is far beyond what Patriot coach Bill Belichick wanted to give him.
"I came in unprejudiced," Amendola told Reiss on Friday. "I understand that Bill has a tight ship and he's not really known for paying his players, I understood that I gave him back money so I could play for him and play for my teammates and fulfill my side of the contract, and at the end of the day I had the confidence that he would give me the opportunity to stay.
"When the freelance agency broke down, I realized that he would not really be close to other offers I had, and I had to make a decision for my family and go to Miami and continue my career there." Amendola had made wage cuts in three consecutive camps to stay in New England. It is unclear what the Patriots offered him before the free agency, although it is not surprising that they were unwilling to pay $ 6 million a year to a 32-year-old slot receiver.
During his five seasons with the Patriots, Amendola played in three Super Bowls and won two. He had one of the most prolific games of his career in the lone Super Bowl loss and caught eight passes on 11 goals for 152 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in what turned out to be his last game as Patriot.
Amendola also shared some candid comments on his experience with Belichick.
"It's not easy, that's for sure," he told Reiss. "He's an Ah-sometimes, there were a lot of things I did not like playing for him, but I have to say the things I did not like were all about making the team better, and I respected him, I did not like to train in the snow, I did not like to train in the rain, but that would make us a better football team and that would make me a better footballer, it was not easy, and he would be the first to admit that it was not easy for him to play at the Super Bowl, the silver lining was that we were at the ring ceremony.
