Netflix was recently broken for a number of users, and the company-provided error message was not clear why. Gizmodo talked to the company about the incident, and Netflix announced more details.
In the past week, reported several outlets that selected Roku devices, as well as older Samsung or Vizio devices TVs would soon lose support for Netflix from December. In a note on his support page Netflix said that affected users would receive error messages about the changes. The same note – one that seems rather vague in the face of the complete failure of their service by the user equipment ̵
"We've notified all affected members with more information about alternative devices we support. You can enjoy Netflix continuously," said Netflix spokesman Gizmodo via email. The spokesman added that the change would affect a "small number" of older devices. But that does not really scratch the surface, why is this happening, and what is it?
The Netflix spokesman told Gizmodo that the company is constantly improving its product, but in particular for Roku devices, the problem is essentially older devices running Windows Media DRM. Since 2010, uses Netflix Microsoft PlayReady. The spokesman said that as of December 2, older devices that can not upgrade to PlayReady will not be able to use the service.
A Roku spokesman told Gizmodo that many of the affected devices are eight to ten years old and that old hardware can not keep up with new software forever. Roku devices that no longer support Netflix include: Roku SD (N1050), Roku HD-XR (N1101), Roku HD (N1100, 2000C) and Roku XD (2050X, 2050N, 2100X, 2100N). The spokesman said the company had communicated directly with its customers both via email and on the device.
Samsung also commented on "technical limitations" when Samsung e-mailed commentary "will affect select 2010 and 2011 Samsung Smart TV models sold in the US and Canada."
Vizio said that the affected devices were sold between 2012 and 2014, and some of its Smart TVs with VIZIO Internet include Apps (VIA). The company added that Netflix "continues to function smoothly on other VIZIO Smart TVs with VIZIO Internet Apps Plus (V.I.A. Plus) and SmartCast TVs / Displays. There are still over 70 apps that customers use with V.I.A. Equipment.
