Honor View 20: Are Holes Better Than Notches?

  Honor View20 Screen

Since the iPhone X, almost every Android device has a notch that allows for a slightly larger screen-to-body ratio. The trend is becoming so popular and so popular that Google has even developed Android 9 Pie specifically to support this feature.

Consumers were obviously not satisfied with the cut. Many cell phones were barely distinguishable in 2018, and those with a more unique design were questionable. We all look forward to the day we can embed the selfie camera under the display, and Honor takes the first step toward this reality by embedding the camera in a small hole in the display.

 Honor View20 Selfie Camera

The Honor View 20 is the company's first device with a FullView display that features a 25mm camera in a 4.5mm cut-out the upper left corner of the screen hides. This screen has eighteen layers and drills only two of the lowest layers to make room for the camera. This helps maintain the structural integrity of the glass while maintaining multiple transparent layers to protect the sensor.

Honor says it has opted for the opening on the top left of the screen, as important information such as time and battery percentage are usually displayed in the top right corner. He also conducted user surveys to determine where people would prefer a clipping, and people apparently overwhelmingly chose the top left.

Honor makes a big difference because it made the hole only 4.5mm instead of using the 6mm neckline of the competition. At his presentation, he made significant strikes at Samsung. In my time with the device, the hole felt barely noticeable, but I could not use the device for games or YouTube, where the hole would probably be much more intrusive.

 Honor View20 Cameras

The selfie camera shot is not the only feature of this phone. The Honor View 20 is one of the first devices to use Sony's new IMX 586 sensor. The Honor 48-megapixel camera is integrated into this device. We could not try the camera at the event, but we're anxious to put it through its paces and test it with other high-resolution cameras like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. In addition to the 48-megapixel sensor is also a 3D camera for depth detection and creating virtual versions of objects.

Honor included a third wireless antenna under the drop-down button on the right side of the device. You get better reception when using the device in landscape mode. We're not sure how much better the reception will actually be, but overkill is never a bad thing. The other antennas are located on the back of the phone under the glass.

Also, dual-band GPS is present here and should help make the device much better triangulated your location, especially in cities with tall buildings.

 Honor View20 back

Honor uniquely positions this device as the final flagship device for 2018 and the first for 2019. It is equipped with the best and brightest Kirin 980 chipset from Huawei, commonly referred to as one the best processors for android applies. Only a few other handsets on the market are offering this chip right now, and there will not be much competition until Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 855 appears early next year.

The Honor View 20 contains 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory is a competitor with many flagship of most other companies. It also has expandable memory with a capacity of up to 256 GB, which currently does not offer many other flagships. For some reason, this has changed into a middle-class feature in recent years, and we're glad to see Honor recognizing its popularity.

Huawei Nano Memory technology is not included in this device, making the Mate 20 the only Pro phone to support it. However, we are not as annoyed as it is a proprietary Huawei technology that would force consumers to buy certain memory cards that are charged using Honor's 4.5V / 5A FastCharge technology. This is not the same 40-watt SuperCharge technology found in Huawei's Mate 20 Pro, but by the honor of Honor, the handset can regenerate 55 percent of the battery within 30 minutes.

Surprisingly, Honor had integrated a 3.5mm headphone jack into this device. This feature is now available almost exclusively on mid-range cell phones. We are very happy that this feature is included. We asked Honor why he decided to keep the jack and there was evidence that user research revealed that he was still very popular. The inclusion of the port with such a large display also proves that there is still room for headphone connections in the phones. It will be hard for other manufacturers to find excuses.

Honor spends a lot of time making his devices look unique, and I'd say they did it here. The Honor View 20 has a unique V-design when it captures the light just right. It looks different than any other phone. The device we saw was the black model, but more colors will be available in the future.

The company also announced the Honor X Moschino, a special edition, the Honor View 20, a partnership with Italian fashion brand Moschino. This variant offers 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of memory for 3,999 yuan (~ $ 580).

The standard version of Honor View 20 will be launched on the Chinese market on December 26, starting at 2,999 yuan ($ 699) for the 6GB + 128GB model and 3,499 yuan for the variant at 8 GB / 128 GB. A global launch is scheduled for January 21, 2019 in Paris, and further pricing and availability data may be announced.

What do you think of this device? It's interesting to see how Honor competes with its big brother Huawei in the specifications, but we're pleased to see that there is a highly competitive option for a traditionally medium-sized business.
